Talking Circles - A Description of Expectations

Description of expectations: Again, these expectations can, and often do, follow the same expectations that teachers have for their classrooms - but if a separate set of expectations need to be created for talking circles, these are my recommendations.

  • Only the person who has the talking piece is talking, if you do not have the talking piece then it's your turn to just listen. This includes the facilitator unless the facilitator needs to re-focus the group and ensure that the expectations are being respected.

  • No interrupting or side conversations

  • Practice active listening skills like sitting upright, looking at the person who is speaking etc.

  • Speak only from your own experience - let others share for themselves

  • Confidentiality: what's said in the circle stays in the circle
